A water softener has 3 major parts that require maintenance:
1.The Mineral Tank: also known as exchange tank, is the part of the water softener where hard water is converted into soft water. It contains a water softener resin bead charged with negative ions. The negative charge attracts the calcium and magnesium minerals from the water which have a positive charge. As hard water passes through the mineral tank, the positively charged ions are absorbed into the resin bead, effectively creating soft water.
2. The Brine Tank: It generally contains a mixture of water and sodium carbonate salts. Once a certain amount of hard water has been filtered in the mineral tank, the brine solution flushes the resin beads in the mineral tank. The calcium and magnesium ions trapped in the resin beads are replaced by the sodium ions in the brine solution; this enables the resin bed to continue extracting minerals from the hard water. Once this process is completed successfully, the brine solution is flushed down the drainage pipe along with the calcium and magnesium ions. Brine tanks should be serviced on a regular basis to keep them functioning properly.
3. The Control Valve: It consists of three parts: a meter, a valve assembly and a control board. The meter measures the level of amount of hard water that has flown through the resin bed and starts the brine flush when it is at zero gallons, the valve assembly helps pass water from one part of the water softener to the other and the control board is used to operate the necessary steps to ensuring you have clean, soft water.
Be sure to call Finken for regular maintenance on you water treatment systems to keep it functioning at its highest potential.
